Matt Chandler Is Latest Fall From Grace in American Evangelicalism The lead pastor of an evangelical megachurch near Dallas announced on Sunday that he would be taking a leave of absence because of an inappropriate online relationship he had with a woman who wasn't his wife. Matt Chandler told the Village Church congregation on Sunday that the relationship was not romantic or sexual but that elders deemed the frequency and familiarity of the direct messages he exchanged with the woman on Instagram "unguarded and unwise." Chandler's abrupt departure marks the latest fall from grace for an American evangelical leader, as recent years have seen a number of men removed from church leadership or disgraced by revelations they behaved inappropriately or engaged in sexual misconduct or abuse. Revelations of men abusing positions of power continue to frustrate and disappoint many in the pews. Below, Newsweek rounds up some notable cases. Matt Chandler In tearful remarks,...

Taylor Swift announces new album ‘Midnights’ set for October The reveal of the album came during a climactic speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, as Swift accepted an award for video of the year. She waited until midnight to reveal the name of the forthcoming record on her social media. Taylor Swift surprised fans Sunday night with the announcement of an all-new album, “Midnights,” set to come out Oct. 21. The reveal of the album came during her climactic speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, as she accepted an award for video of the year, although she waited until midnight to reveal the name of the forthcoming record on her social media, along with not-quite-complete album art. “We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears,” she wrote. “We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t — right this minute — about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of th...

Maneskin Delivers Risque Performance of ‘Supermodel’ at 2022 VMAs Earlier in the night, the group notched their first VMA win for best alternative video for "I Wanna Be Your Slave." After Maneskin member Victoria De Angelis flaunted her Lil Kim circa 1999 VMA-inspired outfit on the red carpet at the 2022 MTV VMAs on Sunday (Aug. 28), it was her bandmate Damiano David’s turn to cause a stir during their electric performance of “Supermodel.” The bare-chested David had no problem showing off his goods, wearing chaps that exposed his rear end. For at-home viewers, MTV zoomed out on the group’s performance various times while an undeterred David partied away with a group of clad dancers alongside him. Despite the camera tricks, Maneskin electrified the crowd in attendance and kept the vibes intact with their hit. In July, the rock quartet achieved its second No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart after “Supermodel” landed at the summit. Their first was “Beggin,” which ...

Sean McDermott addresses the Matt Araiza situation Bills head coach Sean McDermott was visibly emotional as he addressed the civil lawsuit filed against punter Matt Araiza at the start of his postgame press conference Friday night. "I want to talk about something that's more important, which is what we have going on with one of our members of our team right now. And Matt Araiza is a situation that is extremely serious," McDermott said. "It's just hard to go through and it's not a situation that I or we take lightly whatsoever. It's very serious. I understand the sensitivity of the situation. It's clear we have work to do to continue to figure this thing out here, and we're going to do that." Araiza, who is the only punter on the roster did not dress for the game against the Panthers Friday night. McDermott said not having the rookie participate in the game was his call. "It was my decision and at the end of the day I didn't feel like...

Cowboys 27 Seahawks 26 Top 10 Whitty Observations Four Interceptions Winning Preseason Dallas got four picks, two touchdown passes from Will Grier and late, gutsy catches from an undrafted tight end to overcome 10 penalties and the Seahawks. If not for some individual heroics by unsung heroes, we'd be lamenting another 10 penalties by the Dallas Cowboys. Instead - thanks to backup quarterback Will Grier, helmet-losing tight end Peyton Hendershot and four interceptions by their secondary - the Cowboys put the dramatic finishing touches on a winning preseason Friday night at AT&T Stadium. 10. OL OPTION - In a lineup we are almost guaranteed not to see come Sept. 11 against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cowboys opened with an offensive line of Josh Ball at left tackle and Connor McGovern at center. Dallas was obviously moving pieces around as a contingency plan as it scrambles to replace perennial Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith. Also potentially in the plan to fi...

It turned Green Bay's three-point lead into a 10-point advantage. Defensively, LB Ray Wilborn was the Packers' leading tackler with seven total stops, including a sack on a scramble by rookie Saints QB Ian Book, who played the whole game. Recently signed S Micah Abernathy had an interception for the Packer...
